Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, contracted by ingesting food or water contaminated with faeces from an infected person. It is most common in parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America, and the Middle East, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water. Symptoms include a sustained high fever, severe headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhoea. Without treatment, typhoid can lead to serious complications including intestinal perforation, which can be life-threatening.
The typhoid vaccine is given as a single injection. It provides protection for approximately three years, after which a booster is recommended if continued or repeated travel to high-risk areas is planned. The vaccine is suitable for adults and children from 2 years of age. A combined hepatitis A and typhoid vaccine (Hepatyrix or ViATIM) is available for those requiring protection against both infections.
Vaccination should be used alongside careful food and water hygiene practices. Avoid drinking tap water or using ice made from tap water, and choose freshly cooked food served hot wherever possible. The vaccine does not provide 100% protection, so good hygiene habits remain essential throughout your travels.
The vaccine is administered as a single injection into the upper arm. Side effects are usually mild and may include temporary soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, and occasionally mild headache or a low-grade temperature. These typically resolve within 1 to 2 days.
