Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. It is also possible, though less common, to contract TBE by consuming unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals such as goats, sheep, or cows. TBE is found across a wide belt of forested areas from Central and Eastern Europe through to Russia and parts of Asia. While many infections cause no symptoms or only a mild flu-like illness, TBE can progress in some cases to serious inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or the membranes surrounding it (meningitis), which can result in long-term neurological complications.
The standard TBE vaccination course consists of three doses. The first two doses are given 1 to 3 months apart, with the third dose given 5 to 12 months after the second. An accelerated schedule (doses at 0, 7, and 21 days) is available for those with imminent travel plans. A booster is recommended every 3 to 5 years for those with continued exposure risk. The vaccine is suitable for adults and children from 1 year of age.
The vaccine is given as an injection into the upper arm. It is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include temporary soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, and occasionally mild fatigue or headache. Tick prevention measures — including wearing long clothing, using DEET-based insect repellent, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities — should be used alongside vaccination.
