Allergy and Intolerance Testing

Makewell Health and Wellness Clinic provides specialist testing to identify food and environmental allergies and food intolerances. Understanding your health triggers is an important step toward managing symptoms and improving your quality of life. We offer three testing options to suit different needs and budgets.

Allergy Test – £125

A blood test that checks for allergen-specific IgE antibodies. This test examines 23 food allergens and 19 environmental allergens, and is suitable for individuals adults and children over 5, who are able to remain still for a blood test. IgE-mediated allergies typically produce rapid immune responses such as hives, swelling, or breathing difficulties, often occurring within minutes of allergen exposure.

Option 2: Food Intolerance Test – £125

Available for individuals aged 5 who can sit still for a blood test and older. This test detects over 200 food-specific IgG antibodies linked to delayed sensitivities. It covers a broad range of foods including dairy, nuts, wheat, meat, fish, grains, fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Unlike allergies, food intolerances develop slowly over hours or days and produce symptoms such as bloating, headaches, skin complaints, or fatigue.

Option 3: Alex 3 Comprehensive Allergy Screening – £395

Our most comprehensive option, the Alex 3 test analyses 300 specific allergens and provides a graded report indicating the severity of allergic sensitisation. Available from 18 months of age.

  • Tests 300 allergens including foods, pollens, pets, moulds, insect venoms, and latex
  • Provides individual severity grading for each allergen
  • Enables more accurate diagnosis than standard allergy panels
  • Supports informed decisions about allergen avoidance and specialist referral

Understanding the Difference: Allergy vs Intolerance

Allergies trigger a rapid immune response within minutes of exposure, with symptoms such as hives, swelling, or wheezing. They involve the immune system and can in some cases be life-threatening. Intolerances develop more slowly, producing symptoms over several hours or days, and do not involve the same immune mechanism. Both can significantly affect daily life, and testing is the most reliable way to identify your specific triggers.
