Meningitis B Vaccine
Protect against a serious and potentially life-threatening infection.
Summary
Meningitis B is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis (infection around the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can become life-threatening very quickly, even in otherwise healthy young people.
Teenagers and university students are at increased risk due to close contact in shared living environments such as halls of residence.
The Meningitis B vaccine helps protect against one of the most common causes of bacterial meningitis in the UK and is an important way to reduce the risk of serious illness.

Note that no vaccine is 100% effective. If symptoms develop such as a non-blanching rash, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or drowsiness, seek urgent medical attention.
This vaccine will not protect against every strain of meningitis. The meningitis ACWY vaccine will cover some other common strains, and this is offered to teenagers as part of the NHS programme. For those who have not received this vaccine, they may be able to receive it privately.
