Yellow fever is a serious viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South America. The disease can cause flu-like symptoms, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), organ failure, and can be fatal in severe cases. Vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent infection.
The yellow fever vaccine is recommended — and in many cases legally required — for travellers visiting or transiting through affected regions. Countries with high risk include parts of West Africa, Central Africa, and tropical South America. Many countries require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry.
Makewell is an accredited yellow fever vaccination centre, authorised to both administer the vaccine and issue the official ICVP certificate required for international travel. Protection begins 10 days after vaccination and for most people, a single dose provides lifelong immunity. No booster is required under current WHO guidelines.
The yellow fever vaccine is generally well-tolerated. Common mild reactions include soreness at the injection site, headache, and low-grade fever. Rare but more serious reactions can occur — our clinician will assess your suitability and discuss any concerns before vaccination.
