Tetanus (DTP) Vaccination

Private Tetanus Vaccination in Milton Keynes
From£38.00

What Does the Tetanus (DTP) Vaccine Protect Against?

The Tetanus (DTP) vaccine provides combined protection against three serious infectious diseases: Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Poliomyelitis (Polio). Each of these conditions can be life-threatening, and vaccination is the most effective way to prevent them.

  • Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and upper airways, producing a thick membrane that can obstruct breathing. It can also damage the heart and nervous system.
  • Tetanus (lockjaw) is caused by toxins from bacteria found in soil and animal faeces. It causes severe, painful muscle spasms and stiffness throughout the body, particularly in the jaw and neck.
  • Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can cause irreversible paralysis. Though rare in many parts of the world thanks to vaccination programmes, it remains active in certain regions.

Who Should Get the Tetanus (DTP) Vaccine?

The DTP booster is recommended for travellers who have not received a dose within the last 10 years and are planning to visit areas where diphtheria or polio remain prevalent. It is also advisable for those travelling to regions with limited access to medical care, where prompt treatment of wounds or infections may not be available.

Vaccination Schedule

For most adults, a single booster dose provides sufficient protection. Our travel health nurses will review your vaccination history and advise whether a full course or just a booster is required based on your individual circumstances and travel destination.

What to Expect

The vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm. It is generally very well tolerated. Some people experience temporary soreness, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site. A low-grade temperature or mild flu-like symptoms for 24 to 48 hours after vaccination are uncommon but possible.
