Rabies is a fatal viral disease that attacks the central nervous system and is almost always transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Dogs are responsible for the vast majority of human rabies deaths globally, but the virus can also be carried by bats, cats, monkeys, foxes, and other mammals. Once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal, making prevention through vaccination critically important for those at risk. Rabies is present in over 150 countries, with the highest risk in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
The pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) course consists of two doses given on days 0 and 7. This simplified schedule replaced the previous three-dose regimen. Pre-exposure vaccination does not eliminate the need for post-exposure treatment following a potential exposure, but it simplifies the treatment required and buys more time to access medical care.
The vaccine is administered as an injection into the upper arm. Side effects are generally mild and may include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Mild headache or general fatigue is uncommon. Important: If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, always seek medical attention promptly regardless of vaccination status.
