Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver spread primarily through contaminated food and water, or through close contact with an infected person. It is particularly common in countries with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. While most people recover fully, hepatitis A can occasionally cause serious liver complications, particularly in older adults or those with pre-existing liver disease.
A single dose of the hepatitis A vaccine provides protection for up to one year. A booster dose given 6 to 12 months after the first dose extends protection for up to 25 years in most people. For those requiring both hepatitis A and B protection, a combined Twinrix vaccine is available and recommended. The vaccine is suitable for adults and children from 1 year of age.
The vaccine is administered as an injection into the upper arm. It is well tolerated by most people. Common side effects include mild soreness or redness at the injection site, and occasionally a low-grade temperature or brief headache. These effects typically resolve within 1 to 2 days.
