🧠What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental difference that may impact how a person experiences communication, sensory input, relationships, and the world around them. Every autistic person is unique, and so are their needs.

Some people are diagnosed in early childhood. Others may reach adulthood before recognizing their traits. At Makewell, we assess and support both children and adults—without stigma, shame, or assumptions.

📋What’s Included in the Autism Assessment?

Our comprehensive autism assessments are thoughtfully designed to suit different ages, communication styles, and support needs. They include:

1. Developmental & Medical History

  • We gather information about early development, learning differences, behaviours, strengths, and challenges.

2. Clinical Observation & Behavioural Assessment

  • Our team gently observes interactions, routines, and communication styles in a supportive, judgment-free space.

3. Gold Standard Diagnostic Tools

  • We use recognised tools like the ADOS alongside other validated questionnaires to ensure a clear and accurate assessment.

4. Input from Parents or Carers

  • For children, we collaborate with parents and caregivers to understand the full picture.

All assessments are carried out by at least two qualified clinicians, with final outcomes reviewed by our multidisciplinary team.

Are your assessments recognised by schools and the NHS?

Yes, in most cases our assessments and reports are recognised by both schools and the NHS. We regularly see our reports being accepted by GPs, CAMHS and other NHS services, and many patients have gone on to receive further care or treatment, including prescriptions, on the basis of our assessments. Schools also typically use our reports to help guide the support they provide to students.

We also hold contracts with NHS services, which reflects the quality and trust placed in our work.  That said, each NHS trust, GP practice or school may have its own policies, so while difficulties are rare, we cannot guarantee that every report will automatically be accepted in every situation.
