Stay Safe and Steer Clear of Accidents

Accidents can put a serious damper on your trip, so staying alert is key. Take a little extra care when navigating unfamiliar terrain or crossing busy streets. And while it might be tempting to hop on a scooter for a breezy ride, don’t forget the helmet—safety always comes first.

Before you go, consider stopping by Makewell for a travel consultation. We’ll help you prep a first aid kit for your adventure, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, and more. And remember, excessive alcohol or drug use not only increases risks but can also invalidate your insurance—another reason to stay sensible on the road.

Personal Safety: Trust Your Instincts

Backpacking often means venturing off the beaten track, but a little caution goes a long way. Do your homework on local customs and safety tips before heading to a new destination. Keep your valuables secure—anti-theft bags and money belts can be lifesavers—and always listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to walk away.

At Makewell, we can offer personalised safety advice for your chosen destinations. Whether you’re exploring bustling markets or hiking remote trails, our team is here to help you prepare.

Food, Water, and Keeping Your Stomach Happy

Sampling local cuisine is one of the best parts of backpacking, but it’s important to eat smart. Opt for cooked meals at busy restaurants or vendors—if the locals are eating there, it’s usually a good sign.

  • Avoid Contaminated Foods: Avoid foods that are prone to contamination such as salads, uncooked or unwashed fruit & vegetables, unpasteurized dairy products, and food that has been left uncovered in warm environments, such as buffets.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink bottled, filtered, or boiled water. Avoid ice cubes and use safe water for brushing your teeth.
  • Wash Hands: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser, especially before eating.

If you need anti-diarrhoeal medication or oral rehydration salts, Our Makewell Pharmacy have you covered.

If you are unlucky enough to experience diarrhoea, drink plenty of safe fluids to stay hydrated and seek help if your symptoms persist more than 48 hours or are severe or if you have a temperature above 38 degrees centigrade.

Bites, Sunburn, and Other Travel Nuisances

From mosquito bites to intense sunburn, a few small things can make a big impact on your trip. Protect yourself with a good insect repellent (look for one with 50% DEET) and wear long sleeves when mosquitoes are active. And don’t skimp on sunscreen—choose an SPF 30 or higher, apply generously, and reapply often, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.

Try to stay away from stagnant water and sleep safely with mosquito nets if these are provided. Use air conditioning where it is provided to reduce the night time temperature.

Vaccinations, Medications, and Staying Well

One of the most important steps before you jet off is making sure you’re up-to-date with your travel vaccinations. Some vaccines require multiple doses, so don’t leave it until the last minute.  Our travel health experts can guide you through the entire process, Book an appointment at our Milton Keynes clinic, and we’ll make sure you’re fully prepared.

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus
  • Polio
  • Diptheria
  • Meningitis
  • Rabies
  • Yellow Fever
  • Cholera
  • Japanese Encephalitis

If you’re taking medication, pack enough for the trip and keep it in its original container. Double-check the legal status of your medication in the countries you’ll be visiting—this can vary widely.

Blood & Sexually Transmitted Infections

Part of an adventure is trying new things and enjoying memorable experiences. Just make sure that you keep it fun and don’t risk your health by picking up a serious infection.

Avoid New Tattoos and Piercings: These can pose risks if not done in a sterile environment.  If you see a tattoo you really like, take a photo and go to a licensed tattoo parlour with good reviews.

Medical Procedures: If you need any medical treatment, contact your insurer and go to a reputable clinic.  Ensure needles and medical equipment are sterile

Be Cautious with Razors and Needles: Avoid sharing razors or used needles to prevent infections.

Practice Safe Sex: Avoid unprotected sex with a new partner. Condoms can reduce the risk of contracting HIV, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections, as well as unwanted pregnancy.

Seek Help: Obtain medical advice if you suspect you have a bloodborne or sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Travel Insurance: Don’t Leave Home Without It

Comprehensive travel insurance is a non-negotiable for backpackers. Whether you’re trekking in the Andes or navigating a bustling city, having coverage for medical emergencies, theft, and trip cancellations is essential. Make sure your policy includes any adventure activities you’re planning to try, like scuba diving or zip-lining.
